In 1796 the United States Government started issuing $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagles for general circulation. Design changes occurred throughout the years. The $2.50 was issued from 1796 to 1929. The quarter eagle gold coin was .8992 gold, .1008 silver and copper, changed to .900 gold in 1837. Total weight starting in 1840 was 4.18 grams. The Liberty was minted in Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans and San Francisco.
